About Field Notes
Field Notes is a weekly newspaper-style journal of unsponsored, first-person reports about the tools independent knowledge workers actually use.
It is written by Owen Marsh, an independent consultant who spends about half his week working with small teams on operations, tooling and workflow, and the other half writing about what he sees. Field Notes is the outlet for the second half — a running dispatch from the desks of people who work for themselves.
What is here
- Weekly field reports on specific software tools, workflows and small operational decisions.
- Occasional longer essays on knowledge-work, note-taking and the economics of the small business.
- Reader letters, published (with permission and, if requested, anonymously) when they add to a report.
What is not here
- Sponsored posts, affiliate links or "content partnerships." Every tool mentioned is one I have paid for personally.
- Product launch coverage. Field Notes covers tools six months in, not on day one.
- "Best of" list-icles. Every recommendation is grounded in a specific report.

Written in a plain text editor, set in Georgia and Playfair Display, delivered by static HTML and email. There are no third-party trackers on this site. The archive is designed to still be readable in a decade.
